Kunst auf der Liegewiese

Faulerbad, Freiburg i. Br.
15.09.2024 – 17.05.2025

25 YEARS of art on the lawn of the Faulerbad. To mark the anniversary of the attractive sculpture park, numerous artists are once again exhibiting. The Faulerbad sunbathing lawn stretches in lush green between Kronenbrücke, B 31, Faulerstrasse and the swimming pool. Every autumn the new season is ceremoniously opened with ‘fresh’ works that defy the rain, ice and snow in winter, before bathers cavort among the sculptures in spring and summer. Anyone who wants to visit the sculpture park has free entry all year round via the pool cafe.

Simone Rosenow / drawing  und Jan Douma / sculpture

badisches kunstforum, Ebringen
17.11. – 3.12.2024

With Simone Rosenow and Jan Douma, two positions of non-representational expression meet. Rosenow’s dynamic drawings meet Douma’s reduced sculptures. Rhythmic drawings, whether with pen or brush, on paper or canvas, in small or large formats, characterize Rosenow’s work. The movement of emergence can always be read, the lines correspond to each other. Whether they are applied delicately or broadly, loosely next to each other, floatingly distributed, flowing towards or against each other, they have the effect of sounds in a wide space. Douma’s abstract sculptures are made of blackened wood, stone or iron. The material is processed in different ways, from being left almost raw with only minimal interventions to being shaped and finely sanded. The works are assembled from several elements or worked out from one piece. The focus is on the intermediate areas, transitions and references between the elements and the interplay between form, material and surface. Movement meets calmness, lightness meets seriousness, narrowness meets wideness, standing next to each other, facing each other or leaning against each other, bumping into each other, crowding, connecting, moving away – sound meets silence.

“Jan Douma – Interference”

Sculpture and painting

2023. With texts by Antje Lechleiter and Herbert M. Hurka. 88 pages, 50 color illustrations, 23 x 29 cm, Hardcover, thread-stitching.  German/ english. ISBN 978-3-86833-325-1 modo Verlag, Freiburg. Will be released spring 2023

Leaning, laying, stacking: the sculptor and painter Jan Douma, in his extremely succinct handling of the respective material, be it that of the sculpture or that of the paint, does not look for the world in the figurative representation and depictability, but he feels it in the forms and form references themselves. It is often a dualistic body and space experience of being in between, of emptiness or instability, which is reflected in the choice of materials (stone, wood, concrete, iron – oil and acrylic) and surface treatment (flamed, roughly hewn, nuanced in color – vertical and striped) specified. A compact granite block delicately touches a towering oak stele at a tiny point, two columnar concrete sculptures make contact with one another, tongue-shaped, grained olive wood rests in partnership on black flamed ash – in the painting, deep vertical layers of paint make their way upwards and create Vibration and transition in the midst of an abstract spatiality.

Antje Lechleiter and Herbert M. Hurka have written two knowledgeable accompanying essays on Jan Douma’s meaningful work.
